What Is Important About Timber Pretreatment?

Timber Pretreatment is a very important step to take when using any type of timber. We recommend our timber products to be coated with at least an oil based sealer such as Radial Timber Sealer or decking finish on external timber. Radial Timber Sealer is required to repel and control moisture, hence minimises splitting, cracking and checking that can occur. It still allows the timber to grey off naturally while leaving it look and feel like timber. It can be applied to hardwoods used for external cladding, window frames, fences, trellis, decking and pergolas

Radial Timber Sealer

Radial Timber SealerRADIAL TIMBER SEALER is a unique blend of organic and inorganic resins combined with an effective mouldacide, which has been developed to seal and protect Australian Timber making it the perfect Timber Pretreatment. Most timber finishes are usually designed to maintain the freshly cut appearance of timber, but to date there has been none designed to allow the timber to weather naturally to a silvery grey. RADIAL TIMBER SEALER is suitable for this purpose and is designed to be a one off initial application, for new or existing hardwood products. It helps reduce surface checking (resulting from rapid moisture loss) while still allowing the timber to naturally grey off from UV exposure.

RADIAL TIMBER SEALER can be used wherever a true unpigmented clear timber sealer is required to repel and control moisture, hence minimises splitting, cracking and checking that can occur. It still allows the timber to grey off naturally while leaving it look and feel like timber. RADIAL TIMBER SEALER can be applied to hardwoods used for external cladding, window frames, fences, trellis, decking and pergolas

Ensure a clean dry surface, free from dirt, grease and wax. Greyed timber should first be cleaned with a suitable wood cleaner such as Preschem’s GREY DECK CLEANER. Brush spray or wipe one generous coat of RADIAL TIMBER SEALER on to the timber and allow 24 hours drying time.

It can be applied by any convenient means, such as brush, roller, spray or dip application. Exterior floors or decks can be easily treated with a lamb’s wool applicator. If the timber still looks dry, another application may be required. A minimum of 24 hours drying time for decking and areas subject to foot traffic is advisable. Ensure all end grain wood is well coated to minimize water absorption.

RADIAL TIMBER SEALER will remain water repellent for up to 12 months on fully exposed timber in most conditions. It is designed to a true one time only application on new timber. Note that it will lose water repellency over time. However, if the customer wishes to maintain water repellency while retaining the natural silver-grey weathered look, then it is recommended that Preschem’s WEATHER REPELLANT is used.
